Learning to read and write music - intro

There are two major things you need to know to understand how music is written. How sound is represented on the staff. And 2ndly how the length of sound is represented on the staff.

One of the problems with teaching something like music is one never knows where to start.

When I started at music school in 1985 I had no idea how music was written. But in less than a month i surprised myself: I was sitting on a piano trying to make some sense of a music score that i got from the library. The score did not have any title nor author. So I played. Struggled a little bit at first. Then suddenly as I was now beginning to play the score correctly I realised that this was one of the most popular songs / melodies on earth. I jumped from my piano chair out of excitement! I was so excited and began to hunt for more sheet music.

Later in this lessons i will create some songs, perhaps include some popular melodies. Try to play or sing these melodies. After some time I will send an audio of the same melodies and/or songs. That way you will be able to establish how well you can read and write music.

Here you will be able to send questions on anything that is not clear to you and we will be able to help.

There might also be some typos, omissions, logical errors that may affect meanings of sentences. Please let me know if you notice any such problem.
